Energy 21 – the example of a successful regional energy strategy

The regional government of Upper Austria committed itself to sustainable energy production and use by developing a comprehensive energy policy framework. The “Energy 21” programme and strategy ran from 2000-2010 and included ambitious targets in the fields of energy effciency and renewable energy sources. The plan focuses on the following four areas: improving energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, utilising hydro power (up to ecologically defined limits) and reducing the use of fossil fuels.
